CHARLOTTE ARMSTRONG (1905-1969) was a respected Broadway playwright before she turned to suspense fiction in the early 1940s. She achieved considerable success, particularly after her novel The Unsuspected (1947) was made into a memorable Hollywood movie. Ms. Armstrong continued her association with nonprint media over the years, writing several of the most interesting scripts for Alfred Hitchcock Presents. As a novelist she specialized in putting sympathic characters into dangerous positions, and then getting them out in rousing and tension-packed finales. But her short fiction is even better, and can be found in collections such as The Albatross (1957) and I See You (1966).

“The Splintered Monday” is suspense fiction at its very best.
